Joe Paterno Is Just As Guilty As Anyone Else And Needs To Be Removed
If you haven't read the grand jury documents regarding the scandal at Penn State, google it. I have a hard time linking to it.
As disturbing as the events detailed in those documents are, almost as disturbing is the fact that as of this post, we still have not heard from heralded Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
At the end of the day, as we sit right now, no one has been proved guilty. However, the sheer magnitude of the charges indicate that something at the very least inappropriate was happening with underage boys and an individual who had emeritus status as a professor and coach at Penn State.
What we do know for sure is that a graduate assistant saw said former coach in a shower doing unspeakable things to a 10 year old boy. We do know that he told coach Paterno. We know that Paterno took it to the Athletic Director. Sadly, we also know that not one single soul took it any further.
As guilty as AD Tim Curley is, Paterno is just as culpable.
Pennsylvania state law mandates that all reports of possible child abuse be reported to authorities. No one did that. No one deemed it worthwhile to let law enforcement of whatever child protective service Pennsylvania employs know that there was a possibility of young children being abused and taken advantage of by an adult who had access to many children through his charity.
Every day that goes by with Paterno still employed by Penn State is an indictment against himself, the school, and the culture of sports in general.
The only reason Paterno could have for not stepping down in light of recent events is because he truly believes he did enough. Tell that to the boys who have been assaulted in the years since that graduate assistant came forward.
There is nothing so wasted in life as good intentions. The problem I have is that I don't believe Paterno's or the university's intentions were good at all. This was nothing more than reputation preservation with hopes it would never come to light or implicate the university.
And now that has blown up in everyone's face. The legacy and reputation of Penn State and Paterno are forever tarnished and- much more- unable to be forgiven.
There is no excuse to justify not following up to the fullest extent possible. There is no excuse to justify ignoring the multiple complaints and allegations over the years. There is no excuse that will make any of those boys feel better.
And there is no excuse for Joe Paterno to be the head coach of Penn State any longer.
