Goodell, Pryor, Pay College Athletes, Vick, Georgetown vs. China, and "The U"

Roger Goodell upholds the NCAA's suspension of Terrelle Pryor for the first five games of the NFL season. Everyone's up in arms over Goodell "merging the NFL and NCAA" and setting an impossible to evenly distribute precedent, but let me ask you this: did you really think there was a chance in hell he was going to see the field in the first 5 games anyway?

So let me get this straight Generalissimo Goodell: go to jail for robbery and a concealed weapons charge a la Maurice Clarett and you can come back whenever you want but take cash from people with too much of it and miss more than a quarter of your first season? The logic mystifies.

And in the wake of this is the topic that ESPN and every other sports journalist has been talking about with gusto lately: should college athletes receive compensation for their play?

My answer is and always has been that these players are getting the chance to get a top notch education for free and that kind of compensation cannot be ignored. However if a player is able to cash in on being a premiere athlete via endorsement deals, why not?

Now the folks that represent the small schools in the middle of nowhere say that gives an advantage to the larger schools that would tend to have richer endorsement options and therefore hurt the recruiting efforts of said small schools.

I'm sorry, University of Idaho, I missed the BCS Championship Game you were in contention for. That argument rings hollow because for every Boise State that may come around every now and then there are 90 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams that have no shot at a championship. They are eliminated in August.

My point being that they weren't going to get the Reggie Bushes or the Tim Tebows or the Cam Newtons anyway. To think otherwise is delusional. Let the top athletes take advantage of the opportunities their college success presents to them.

And in other Goodell news, apparently Michael Vick credits Goodell with helping him to land in Philadelphia. Obviously, the knee-jerk reaction is to hear comments like that and think that Goodell told him where he should go.

Personally, I don't think that's what happened but all the Goodell haters are out in force more than ever. Agree or disagree with his decisions, I can't see him being dumb enough to do something like that.

I'd love to blame the Georgetown Hoyas for the brawl in China, but after watching the video the Chinese team showed the world just what a band of punks they are.

I'm all for physical basketball, but this wreaks of a Rocky IV subplot. The Bayi Rockets (Rockets? How coincedental) were awarded 57 free throws as opposed to just 15 for the Hoyas. 57-15. Are you kidding me? The only thing missing was Hoya players running up a mountain and yelling "Yaoooooooo!!!!!" at the top of their lungs.

BS artist of the day: University of Miami Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst who dropped this gem: "There are tough times ahead, challenges to overcome and serious decisions to be made, but we will be left standing and we will be stronger as a result. I understand there are unanswered questions, concerns and frustration by many but this athletic department will be defined now and in the future, by our core values, our integrity and our commitment to excellence, and by nothing else."

Core values? Integrity? Do you think we've lived in a bubble the last 30 years? "The U" has been notorious for looking the other way and creating this environment of chaos. Don't go getting on your high horse now just because some ponzi scheme dirtball ratted you out and left you with your pants down.

I've heard loads of crap in my life, but that statement has to be near the top. Right up there with this:
