Moss In Minny Should Mean End For Angelo
So Randy Moss is a Viking. Question: if Randy-Freakin'-Moss coulda been had for a 3rd and 7th rounder, where were you Jerry Angelo ponying up with an offer??? Where were you, Jerry?
These are the questions that need to be answered. Perhaps there was some kind of secret society affiliation between the two organizations and the whole football world didn't know he was available.
However, I'm not buying it. The whole Twitter-verse knew about it Tuesday evening. I've been scraping the internet and can't find any morsel of a nugget of information that would make me think Jerry even picked up the phone to ask.
In all honesty, the Bears have bigger issues on the offensive line and a quarterback whose eggs are still a little bit scrambled. But as of today, one would like to think that maybe those two issues would be figured out by the bye week. Before these two issues, one of the knocks on the roster was the lack of a true "X" receiver.
This is as much a referendum on Angelo's ability to make the right moves as anything else. He has single handedly turned draft day recaps about the Bears into simply a list of future cuts. He traded for a Pro Bowl quarterback and surrounded him with an above average RB, a pretty good third down back, a competent Tight End and......nothing else.
He drafted Chris Williams when everyone in the world said he was injured. Angelo apparently didn't believe him, drafted him in the first round, and watched the tackle of the future sit out his first NFL season with an injury- wait for it again- the whole world knew about when Branden Albert and Jeff Otah were still available.
He traded Thomas Jones in 2007 because why does a team need two good running backs these days, right? How'd that whole Cedric Benson thing work out anyway? Not to mention that decision was the reason the Bears had to draft Matt Forte anyway! Not to mention Ray Rice and DeSean Jackson were still available when Forte was taken.
Just this past offseason, the decision was made to jettison Defensive End Alex Brown and not re-sign Adewale Ogunleye. Starting with the 2006 season, all Brown did was put up 7, 4.5, 6, and 6 sacks each year. Not all-world but still consistent. Ogunleye put up 6.5, 9, 5, and 6.5 sacks in the same time period. How many have Julius Peppers and- until Tuesday- Mark Anderson combined for this year? 2 sacks, both by Peppers. Do the math kids, that extrapolates to 8 total sacks. Last time I checked, that was less than 12.5 the Bears got from Brown and Ogunleye last year.
Not that I'm saying anything against Peppers- it was a good signing. In the wake of that, the decision was made to keep Anderson and let two productive ends go. Supposedly Lovie Smith is all about accountability.
Team President Ted Phillips should be, too.
