Heat Exhaustion Already

NBA training camps have only been open for about two and a half minute and I'm already sick of the media gushing over LeBron James and the new-fangled Miami Heat.

I know what you're saying: "Keith, it's not even October yet. How are you going to make it all the way to June?" The short answer is I'm not. I admit that. Someone will have to come talk me down from some ledge somewhere as the media glows over the holy triumvirate steamrolling through the Eastern Conference.

ESPN's NBA commentator Jon Barry, who is more famous for his dad than anything else, said on Sportscenter this morning that they look very good so far.

Looked good doing what? Suicide sprints? Free Throw drills? What exactly are they doing that makes one comment in such ludicrous manner. Even if you're judging their performance strictly on 5-on-5 scrimmages- they're beating themselves. Can you really judge athletic performance based on scrimmages against their own teammates in September?!

I think not, Mr. Barry. The sad thing is that this is just the beginning. Can you imagine the hyperbole throughout sports media-land if they beat the defending Eastern Conference Champion Boston Celtics by a healthy margin on opening night? You'll have to batten down the hatches to keep everyone from predicting an 80 win season. (Of course, I have them losing twice to the Lakers)

Sure, this team is going to win 60-65 games. But nowadays, very good teams do that. LeBron did that in Cleveland and you see how far that got them. They still have to prove themselves on the court against the established powers, not to mention the two-time defending champions.

LeBron apparently is taking names of all the haters who dare criticize his posse's decision to centralize power, weaken the league, and draw unearned attention their way.

Well, Mr. James, add my name to the list. Until you're dancing in the confetti in June you haven't earned anything. There are few things in this life more meaningless than the NBA regular season. It takes so much more than talent to win a ring.

Just ask the '04 Lakers.
