Bears 2-0....Somehow

The Chicago Bears beat the Dallas Cowboys 27-20 and a 2-0 start. The win sets the stage for a Monday Night Football showdown next week between the also 2-0 Green Bay Packers.

Does it get any better than this? Maybe if this were Week 17 and the two teams had identical records and fighting for first place. The beauty is that this is only the first meeting.

Anywho, back to today's game. This is one of those victories that after the end of the game, I felt myself constantly checking ESPN for the score to make sure I saw it right.

I mean, the numbers add up, but gosh it seemed like if you could blot out the scoreboard and ask anyone who was winning simply by the play on the field they would have said the Cowboys running away. After Bears' LT Chris Williams left the game with hamstring injury, the Bears replaced him with Kevin Shaeffer.

This lasted about a nanosecond as Shaeffer managed to show the world he belongs nowhere near the left side of the Center. But give offensive line coach Mike Tice credit for immediately moving Shaeffer to the right side and flip-flopping him with Frank Omiyale. A move that I will admit that when I first saw it, my stomach immediately bubbled. It's no secret that Omiyale is very close to achieving John Thierry status for most hated Bear of all time.

But give the man credit, help or no help, he was a part of an improved protection scheme that saw some pretty nifty plays unseen in Chicago since the birth of the "T" formation. Yes, a one-handed Devin Hester TD grab is enough to excite me and bring out that comparison.

It seemed as though Tony Romo was passing all over the place. However, when you see that he threw the ball 51 times and the Bears defense wore their big boy pants and held the Cowboys to 36 yards on 20 rushes, you see why he threw so much.

In fairness the Bears themselves only rushed for 38 yards on 19 carries. However Cutler only threw the ball 29 times. Oh and he didn't have an interception, something I think even he was shocked at when it was over. Quality over quantity my friends. Again, something not seen 'round these parts in quite some time.

Mike Martz also deserves a tip of the cap for momentarily doing away with his 23 step drops and using some quick routes to neutralize what was shaping up to be a one way trip to the emergency room for Cutler.

You'll always take a win, no matter how ugly. However ugly wins are something I think are necessary to a contender. I'm not ready to put that stamp on them yet, but after watching them beat a Cowboys team that obviously isn't as good as everyone thinks they are, it's hard to not get an optimistic gleam in your eye.

That could all change next week, but until then, it's Packer week. Don't expect me to be in a good mood.
