Pre-NFL Week 1 Rant

I'm waiting for Mr. Taylor to email his picks for week 1- 3 against the spread and one upset special. Try to have a little fun and join in. Email your picks to 87sportsfans@live.com. THE VIKINGS-SAINTS GAME the other night was quite a sight, and not for the reasons I thought it would. After the opening drive TD pass to Devery Henderson from Drew Brees I thought for sure we were looking at a 45-42 game in the making. However, reality set in and defense made an appearance. Adrian Peterson was, as Steve put it, a "robeast", but it was Mr. Favre- bane of my existence- who was the deciding factor. To say he underscored the reason why training camp is necessary is putting it very lightly. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that he had a full preseason worth of work with his receivers, the outcome probably would have been different. All in all, we may find out by the end of the year that sending the emissaries to Mississippi to twist Brett's arm into playing was the worst decision the Vikings could have made. What's worse: 100% of Tarvaris Jackson or 25% of Favre? Obviously we know which way the Vikings felt. Reality though may dictate otherwise. I WAS ON SIRIUS NFL RADIO MOVING THE CHAINS and talking with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan about my beloved Bears. PK said the chances for success in Chicago depended on Mike Martz's ability to alter what he normally does to fit what the Bears have. However, he made this point just after my call was ended so I couldn't ask the obvious: just what in the wide wide world of sports do the Bears have?! They have an able average running back and quarterback who are dependent on a non-existent offensive line. You could have Joe Montana and Walter Payton back there and it wouldn't male a bit of difference behind that line. Some teams have angle blocking, others have zone blocking. The Bears have a new hybrid- no blocking. 8-8 my friends. Sheesh. THE OTHER COMPELLING STORY this week is the Jets-Ravens matchup. I just wish there was as many healthy players as there are barbs being exchanged. Wouldn't it be great if Houshmandzadeh or Boldin torches Revis on the first drive? And in the post-game presser he blames it on not being on football shape? Yeah man, great. -----KG
