Sunday Rant 9-5-10

So final cut down day in the NFL was yesterday and there were some folks who were previously held in high regard left without a job. However, at this moment in time, I'd like to focus on my Chicago Bears.

Not only were more of Jerry Angelo's wonderful draft picks cut, a team that was supposed to not have a use for one tight end kept four. With the lack of a pass rush in recent years, was it really worth cutting Jarron Gilbert to keep Kellen Davis? Really?

You remember Gilbert, don't you? The draft prospect that had a YouTube video of himself jumping out of a shallow pool of water onto the deck of the pool?

Unfortunately, superhuman aquatic ability doesn't translate to defensive line play and he found a hard time getting on the field last year. Given last year's deplorable defensive line play, I guess that's as much an indictment as anything else.

Oh but don't worry, that lack of depth in the secondary will distract you from the lack of pass rush.

It's September 5th and I'm already shifting my focus to the NBA.

Notre Dame won it's first game with Brian Kelly as head coach and everyone's ready to announce the return to prominence of one the legendary sports programs in American history.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

You'll forgive me if I reserve judgment until he wins more games than Ty Willingham and survives long enough to fulfill a ridiculously long contract that's inevitably due to come in a year or two.

#15 Pitt lost to unranked Utah in overtime, marking the first time since February Dave Wannstedt has disappointed sports fans.

I'm not really that surprised that Jacksonville State upset Ole Miss in 2 overtimes. I mean, you have to credit cohones on Jacksonville State to go for two and the win, but Ole Miss has been besieged by distraction since the NCAA ruled quarterback Jeremiah Masoli couldn't play only to reverse their decision the day before gameday.

You see that? I went the whole blurb without out a reference to theft. For example, I could have said: "Now Masoli knows what it's like to have something stolen from him". But I didn't.  See that?  The high road- that's what it's called.

It would have been totally understandable if new Florida quarterback John Brantley went out and tanked his debut succeeding the anointed one Tim Tebow.

And while it was far from perfect, he's got the first "W" under his belt and hopefully some of the nonsense will go away. The fact of the matter is that in college sports, Tebow was an exception. A uniquely given athlete that raised the bar for the position across the nation.

However to expect another athlete of his caliber to come walking through the admissions office every four years is absolutely insane.

I'm actually pulling for the Gators this year just to stick it in everyone's Tebow-filled craw.
