LeBron Should Be A Knick
Unless you've been staging an anti-technology protest the last 4 weeks, you're well aware that Cleveland Cavaliers' free agent LeBron James is almost ready to make his decision regarding which team he will call home next year.
James is easily the most sought after player in a rare off-season that included multiple top-tier free agents. The entire state of Ohio is held hostage as they wait to see if their much-hotter-than-them prom date is really coming back from the bathroom or just used it as an excuse to duck out the window and meet up with people she really wanted to spend the night with.
James already has more money than God, so that really shouldn't be a main concern although he should expect to be paid reasonably well by league standards. So the question must be asked: where should the self-dubbed "King" go?
The old-school fan in me wants to say he should stay in Cleveland. My soul believes that he should show some gratitude toward the team that took a chance that the all-world High School Prep star would live up to his enormous billing in the NBA.
He has become one of the top 3 individual players in the league and the inevitable comparisons to Michael Jordan mean that sooner or later the young man has to put a ring on his finger if he wants to continue to be in that discussion.
However LeBron has the opportunity to be something more. He has the opportunity to define a city, should he eventually be able to string success together like the aforementioned Jordan.
He's been rumored to be considering staying with the Cavaliers, or going to either the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, or Miami Heat. The Heat, with the recent announcement of the intentions to sign by DeWayne Wade and Toronto Raptors' free agent forward Chris Bosh seem to be the closest new contender for a title. However, I don't think it is by any means a given and I think LeBron knows that as well.
Chicago would mean even more contrasts and comparisons to Michael Jordan and even more pressure than James is already under to win a championship.
The one entry that intrigues me the most is the Knicks. Head coach Mike D'antoni is well known for a fast paced style of play, a game that would suit LeBron well. They already have signed former Phoenix Suns C Amare Stoudemire who played for D'antoni before and would make gelling a new superstar that much easier.
The one thing that would attract me most is the intangible fact that it's New York. A city with a team who plays in one of the most storied arenas in American history hasn't sniffed a championship in 16 years and suffered through the Isiah Thomas debacle. If LeBron could win championships in Knicks uniform, he would be able to carve out a legend more so than any number of championships in Cleveland would. Winning in Chicago would provide a similar ability, but there is so much risk involved if they do not win.
The Knicks are rebuilding and have taken a major step forward signing Stoudemire. LeBron playing on the grandest stage, bringing championship basketball back to New York would ensure him of a place alongside the all-time greats.
Jordan has Chicago. Kareem, Magic, and Kobe have Los Angeles. Why shouldn't LeBron have New York?
