Favre-fetched
I was sick of the circus two years ago.
No, not the kind with big tops and animal tricks. I'm referring to the
now annual fiasco surrounding the yearly endeavors of now Vikings
quarterback Brett Favre.
If there's by any chance you're unfamiliar with the story, here's the
short, short version:
Hall of Fame quarterback gets run out of town by the Green Bay Packers, announces retirement only to recant in July and show up for the last part of minicamp with the New York Jets. That was 2008. Rinse and repeat in 2009, only change "New York Jets" to "Minnesota Vikings".
At least with the Vikings, head coach Brad Childress rearranged his personal agenda to pick Favre up from the airport. Well, well somebody's important.
I have no problem with players playing into their forties. I have no problem with players taking a month or two to decide something as life changing as stepping away from their respective sports into retirement. And no, this hatred is not sparked by intense loathing for anything associated with the Green Bay Packers.
OK, well maybe a little.
More to the point, as a fan the shenanigans bother me because it tells me more about "Favre the Teammate" than I could ever learn from listening to his teammates or being there in person. Brett Favre is an ego-maniac and this is proved by his actions that led the Packers to enact their succession plan and the New York Jets to intimate that maybe they'd be better off with then rookie Mark Sanchez under center.
Now this.
Brett Favre's life decision making abilities have become a joke to all of us, and now apparently to him too. I'm not even talking about the Sears commercials.
There have been rumors about him needing ankle surgery, and yet no reports of him undergoing any kind of procedure or even making a decision whether or not to have the surgery. Call me crazy, but as we approach June, wouldn't a man in his forties want to have any kind of invasive surgical procedure on a major joint done as soon as possible to facilitate a complete recovery?
Any rational man would. Favre is not rational otherwise he would have sacked up and told everybody outright before the draft what his intentions were. If I were a betting man, I'd put money on him coming back. I'd plan on him having surgery in June and showing up to Viking's camp somewhere around mid-August.
Just in time to avoid the hard work of training camp and bask in the spotlight, which is all he really cares about.
