Grieve-ing Period 10-24-09

Hello all and welcome to what will hopefully be a weekly addition to 87sportsfans, a trip into the head of me- Keith Grieve. Hence the title, pretty creative, huh?

I didn't think so either.

Game 6 of the ALCS is tonight and the Yankees return home to try to finish what Mike Scoicia couldn't do the other night- end the Angels season. I've heard what his explanation was and I just don't care. There was absolutely no reason to pull Lackey from that game at that point. Given the magnitude of the game and what he had done to that point, you have to give at least one more hitter. Giving up a 6 spot in the seventh isn't exactly what championship teams are made of, which is why I feel that whenever this game is actually played the series is over and we can all look forward to World Series that will clearly define why Major League Baseball needs to adopt the "Grieve Doctrine" to avoid snowy World Series.

What's that? You haven't heard the "Grieve Doctrine"? What a crime.

There's no denying that the addition of the Wild Card has added a much needed bit of flair to the baseball playoffs. However the addition of an extra series ends up pushing the World Series back to the last week of October if not November. This edition will most likely feature teams from New York and Philadelphia. Not exactly conducive to sunny skies, is it?

Cold weather totally changes baseball and essentially renders the performance of the teams in the regular season meaningless. So the "Grieve Doctrine" proposes Sunday double headers from June through the first week of September.  This will allow baseball to knock 14 days off the schedule, take advantage of summer Sundays where most fans have time to go to a ballgame, and most importantly keep the snowblowers out of the stadiums.

By starting in June, it gives teams time to get momentum. By ending after the first week of September, it gives teams at least two to three weeks of the season to have their players playing on a normal schedule.

Of course owners will do a day-night setup so they don't lose the box office, and I can respect that. The players will gripe about having to play two games on those specific nights. Thank you for sharing but most of you have 5 months of the year off!

I know what you're thinking, this sounds too perfect. It's too easy.

You're right, and that's why it won't happen in our lifetime.
