Which Is More Valuable?
I know, it's been a while. Let's try to make this less awkward than when you run into an ex-girlfriend who obviously is better off.
Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth was suspended indefinitely today by the NFL. This coincides with his mammoth 30-day sentence for driving under the influence and killing a pedestrian.
Yes, mammoth was sarcasm.
The suspension was true to form for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has not held back from making a clear statement that image matters in the NFL.
The only part of this that doesn't make sense is the criminal justice system which seems to value human life less than canine.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not diminishing Michael Vick's crimes in any way. However, in Stallworth's case a man died.
It is true that the individual was not crossing the street inside the crosswalk and apparently darted out from between cars. It is also true that Stallworth was legally under the influence, which no doubt affected his reaction time. We'll never know if the alcohol made the difference between life or death, however I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that Mario Reyes would have had a better chance if Stallworth opted for ice water.
Yet Stallworth gets thirty days in jail and Vick got almost two years. If the difference is truly that Vick was less than cooperative and according to some sources lied to investigators, it still seems a little uneven.
While killing dogs and coming up with the scheme and operation of it all is a bit more in depth than someone not getting out of the way of an SUV at 7:15 AM, the mere fact that a human life was lost makes me think a month in jail is a bit light.
However Stallworth's complicitness in the investigation and prosecution apparently went a long way and the family of the victim apparently wanted the case resolved.
At least there's the good ole NFL to make sure at least on some level justice is served.
