That's Great Man, But Who Are The 'Chefs'?

The Kansas City Chiefs are heading in a different direction. That doesn't necessarily mean up.

According to ESPN.com, the Chiefs have fired Head Coach Herm Edwards after 3 very unspectacular years. In 2008, the Chiefs finished a dismal 2-14..

The move paves the way for a rumored hiring of ex-Denver Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan.

It would be fair to say Edwards had a chance he could direct the franchise to success, but it wasn't all his fault. The Chiefs never found a suitable replacement for quarterback Trent Green, one of the main reasons the Kansas City offense was somewhat potent before 2007.

Shanahan would bring with him his zone-blocking scheme and has a proven track record making stars out of unhearladed running backs. Most of which had far less talent than Chiefs RB Larry Johnson.

Tyler Thigpen, entering his third year in the league, could prove serviceable after an 18 TD and 12 INT season.

None of Shanahan's offensive genius will make a bit of difference unless new GM Scott Pioli makes some major improvements to a defense that steamrolled all year.

They were 31st in total yards allowed per game including an atrocious 158.9 rushing yards per game. They were also 29th in points allowed at 27.5.

The one bright spot is that the Chiefs were +5 in turnover differential, so if upgrades can me made to be able to actually tackle an opposing running back it may not take that long for the Chiefs to turn things around.
